What the AIGP exam costs in 2026

US$649 or US$799 for the exam, US$295 membership or a US$250 maintenance fee, the practice exam, training and textbook, and what the IAPP does not publish.

The AIGP exam costs US$649 for IAPP members and US$799 for everyone else. That is the price on the IAPP store on October 20, 2026, and it is the largest single cost of becoming an Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional, but it is not the only one. Keeping the certification costs a maintenance fee or a membership, the IAPP's own preparation materials are priced separately, and a handful of situations forfeit the exam fee outright. This guide lists every price the IAPP publishes, when each is paid, which ones are optional, and what the IAPP does not publish at all, so you can total the cost for your own case before you buy.

The textbook's own store pages give a member price for each edition; the knowledge-area listing shows only the non-member price.

The exam: US$649 or US$799

The store page describes what the fee buys: "It consists of 100 questions and has an allotted time of 2.75 hours with a 15-minute break and must be completed within one year of purchase." One fee, one attempt, taken at a Pearson VUE test center or online through OnVUE at no difference in price; the store page lists both ways of taking it under one product.

The fee is paid once per attempt, not once per certification. The handbook's rule for a failed exam is a new purchase: "Candidates who do not successfully pass their exam may purchase a new exam after their exam results reflect in their MyIAPP profile." The retake is cheaper, the FAQs say, "Previously failed exams also receive a discounted retake price on subsequent attempts of the same certification", but the store shows that price only after you answer, on the exam page, whether you have attempted the AIGP before or hold another IAPP certification. The same question unlocks the other discount the FAQs mention: "If you currently hold an IAPP certification, any additional first-time certification exams will receive a discounted price." Neither discounted figure appears on the public page, so neither appears here.

The store prices in US dollars and the pinned pages show no regional price, so a candidate in India, the United Kingdom or anywhere else pays the same US$649 or US$799 at that day's exchange rate.

Membership or a maintenance fee

Passing the exam does not by itself make you certified. The handbook: "IAPP membership or the purchase of a certification maintenance fee is required for a certification to be in good standing. A digital certificate will not be awarded until this requirement has been met and the certification is active." The FAQs put the two options and their prices side by side: to keep the credential, the holder "must meet the minimum CPE requirements and either pay their certification maintenance fee (CMF) of USD250 for a certification term or become an IAPP member for USD295 annually, which carries additional benefits."

The store's exam page explains how the maintenance fee works for a non-member: "For non-members, the initial CMF is included in their exam fee and then a $250 CMF fee is required upon recertification." So the US$799 covers the first term's fee. The study guide, for its part, still recommends "purchasing the certification maintenance fee at the time of your exam purchase"; the store's checkout will show which applies on the day.

A term is two years: "The AIGP certification term is two years, beginning the day after you pass your exam." In that term, the store says, holders must "submit evidence of 20 continuing education credits that correspond to the content in the AIGP BoK" and pay the maintenance fee for the term; "For members, this fee is covered as part of their membership benefits."

Which is cheaper depends on what else you buy, because membership also lowers the price of everything else on the list. The arithmetic for a first attempt:

PathMemberNon-member
Exam onlyUS$944 (US$295 + US$649)US$799
Exam and practice examUS$994US$859
Exam, practice exam and online trainingUS$1,989US$2,054
All of the above and the digital textbookUS$2,054US$2,129

Buying the exam alone, a non-member pays US$145 less. Add the IAPP's online training and the member path is US$65 cheaper, before any of the membership's other benefits. Over the two-year term, a non-member who stays a non-member pays US$250 at recertification; a member pays US$295 a year for as long as they keep the membership.

The IAPP's preparation materials

None of these is required. The FAQs are explicit: "No one paid resource is required to pass the exam, nor do any serve as a catch-all study guide to passing the exam. The paid study materials we offer should serve as tools to help you learn the information in the free resources."

The practice exam, US$50 or US$60. The store describes "100 practice questions (presented in a PDF) similar in format and content to the AIGP exam" with "Correct answers with explanations provided for each question", available "immediately upon purchase through your MyIAPP portal". It is a PDF rather than a timed sitting, so it shows you the wording of the questions more than the clock. The study guide says the practice exam "consists of 100 questions in the same format as the official certification exam."

The online training, US$995 or US$1,195. The store lists "seven interactive training modules" that deliver "the equivalent of a 13-hour live training", carrying 13.0 CPEs and "A printable certificate of attendance". The FAQs are careful about what training is: "courses are not purely test prep, nor does taking training guarantee you'll pass your exam", and the reason is a required separation between the IAPP's training and certification departments under its accreditation. Training is "one step you can take to learn material covered on the exams", not a shortcut through them.

The textbook, US$65 or US$75 digital and US$85 or US$95 print, member and non-member. "AI Governance: From Strategy to Execution" is the title the store's AIGP page lists, and its own pages call it the official textbook for the program. The handbook's note applies to all three products: "All official preparation materials reflect their bodies of knowledge", and "Certification exams are not a reflection of the candidate's ability to recall by memory the preparation materials."

Free. The Body of Knowledge and exam blueprint, the AIGP study guide, the candidate handbook and the certification FAQs are all free from the IAPP's site, and the FAQs name the Body of Knowledge "the main guide as to what topics will be covered on the exam". The AIGP Body of Knowledge v2.1, explained walks through it.

Fees you can lose

The handbook describes several ways to forfeit the exam fee without taking the exam, and each of them is avoidable.

  • Letting the year run out. "All IAPP exams must be scheduled and taken within one year of purchase", and "Expired exams will be closed and fees forfeited."
  • Missing the appointment. A no-show means "the purchased exam attempt considered consumed", and such exams "cannot be rescheduled"; a new exam must be bought. Pearson VUE may reopen the exam, but "only granted in cases of medical emergency or the like."
  • Arriving late at a test center. "If you arrive late, you may not be allowed to take your exam and will be considered a no-show, forfeiting all fees."
  • Failing the ID check. In person, you need "two qualifying forms of ID"; online, a government-issued ID whose name matches your registration. "Candidates who are turned away for not having proper identification will forfeit all exam fees."
  • Being dismissed for a rule violation. "If an exam attempt is ended for violation of testing rules, the exam is permanently closed, and all fees are forfeited."

Rescheduling, by contrast, is free within the limits. The FAQs say "you may cancel or reschedule your exam as many times as needed" inside the one-year window, with "at least 48 hours notice" for an in-person appointment, while remotely proctored exams "may be rescheduled up to 15 minutes after the appointment time is scheduled to start."

Costs the IAPP does not cover

The handbook is blunt about expenses beyond the fee: "The IAPP will not be held responsible for any expenses incurred in the pursuit of certification, including but not limited to travel expenses and lost wages on the day of the exam." If a test center or technical fault spoils the attempt, "the IAPP may provide a complimentary exam attempt but will provide no other remedies or compensation for stress, inconvenience or related concerns."

So the travel to a test center, the day off work, and a second attempt's time all sit outside the published prices. OnVUE removes the travel but adds its own requirements: a personal computer rather than a work device, no VPN, and a room that passes the check-in photos.

What the IAPP does not publish

  • The retake price. Discounted, the FAQs say, but shown only in the store after you answer the attempt question.
  • The price for holders of another IAPP certification. Also discounted, also unlisted.
  • Regional prices or taxes. The store lists US dollars only.
  • A pass rate, which would tell you how likely a second fee is. Nothing in the pinned documents gives one.

Totaling it for your case

Start from the exam fee for your status, decide on membership by what else you will buy, and add the preparation you will actually use. For most candidates that is the free documents plus one source of practice questions, because the exam's format, 100 multiple-choice questions, some multi-select and some scenario-based, is what the published materials cannot rehearse for you. The IAPP's practice exam is one option. Our AIGP practice is in the app, every answer with its rationale and source: the first competency's lessons, questions and flashcards are free in full with a free account, and the full course adds the rest of the question bank and a mock exam in two halves on the exam's clock, at the monthly or annual price on the pricing page.
