Blueprint
What the AIGP covers.
Professionals in AI governance, and anyone responsible for adopting or managing AI in an organization.
IAPP publishes the blueprint below. The ranges are IAPP’s own; the percentages are the midpoints of those ranges as shares of the 85 scored questions — not separate hurdles, since scoring is based on the total number of questions answered correctly. Every lesson sits under its area and reads in the app.

How the AIGP runs
- Halfway through, a 15-minute break divides the exam into two halves, each with half the questions and half the time. The first half is submitted before the second begins, break or no break, and cannot be reopened.
- Every question is multiple choice. One with more than one correct answer says so and asks for a set number of them, in the IAPP’s own example “Select 3 of the 5 options below”, and there is no partial credit.
- Results come on a scale from 100 to 500. A score of 300 or above passes, and the IAPP says that 300 does not represent 60%.
- The Body of Knowledge gives each domain and competency a range of the 85 scored questions rather than a percentage; the weights on this page are the midpoints of those ranges.

What is the AIGP, and who takes it?
The Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional is the IAPP’s certification in AI governance, developed, in the IAPP’s words, to certify professionals in the field of AI governance. Its Body of Knowledge says anyone responsible for adopting or managing AI in an organization will benefit, and the credential shows a fundamental understanding of AI governance and of best practices for managing AI systems responsibly in the US, the EU and other jurisdictions.

How is the AIGP exam structured?
100 multiple-choice questions, of which 85 are scored and 15 are unscored, in 2.75 hours with a 15-minute break. The break comes halfway and divides the exam into two halves, each with half the questions and half the time. Whether or not you take the break, you submit the first half before the second begins, and you cannot return to it.

What is a multi-select question?
IAPP exam questions have one or more correct answers. A question with several says so and asks for a set number of them, for example “Select 3 of the 5 options below”; a question with one correct answer lets you pick only one. No partial credit is given on a multi-select question: the set has to be exactly right. The practice questions and the mock here include multi-select questions in the same format.

Are there scenario questions?
Yes. The handbook says test takers may be asked to read a scenario and then answer questions relating to it, and the IAPP’s FAQs say some questions are scenario-based. The IAPP publishes no figure for how many.
Source: IAPP Certification Candidate Handbook v5.3.2 (effective June 1, 2026), page 9; IAPP Certification FAQs
How is the exam scored, and what is a pass?
Results are reported on a scale from 100 to 500, and 300 or above passes. The passing score is set by beta testing and psychometric review and then placed at 300 on the scale; answering every scored question correctly gives 500. The IAPP says 300 does not represent 60%, and asks candidates not to work out a passing score from the percentages on their score report. The result, pass or fail with the score, shows on screen as soon as the exam ends.
Source: IAPP Certification Candidate Handbook v5.3.2 (effective June 1, 2026), page 13; IAPP Certification FAQs
How are the questions spread across the domains?
The Body of Knowledge gives each domain a range of the 85 scored questions rather than a percentage: 16 to 20 on the foundations of AI governance, 19 to 23 on how laws, standards and frameworks apply to AI, 21 to 25 on governing AI development, and 21 to 25 on governing AI deployment and use. Each of the 13 competencies has its own range within its domain. After the exam, a section breakdown shows the percentage of your correct answers in each domain.

What if I fail? Can I retake the exam?
Yes, by buying a new exam once your result shows in your MyIAPP profile. A retake appointment cannot be sooner than seven days after the previous attempt. Missing an appointment counts as a no-show: the attempt is used up and cannot be rescheduled, except where Pearson VUE reopens it in a medical emergency or the like.
Source: IAPP Certification Candidate Handbook v5.3.2 (effective June 1, 2026), page 14
What does the exam cost, and how long do I have to take it?
US$649 for IAPP members and US$799 for non-members, bought from the IAPP store. The exam must be completed within one year of purchase. The store shows a retake price only once an option is chosen, so it is not recorded here.
Source: IAPP Store: AIGP Exam
Where can I take it?
At a Pearson VUE testing center, which the IAPP says it has at locations throughout the world, or from home or work through Pearson VUE’s OnVUE online proctoring, with hundreds of virtual appointments available daily. You schedule through the Pearson VUE website, reached from the My Purchases section of your MyIAPP account.

Which Body of Knowledge does the exam follow, and how often does it change?
Version 2.1, in force for anyone testing on or after February 2, 2026. Its changes from the previous version: Domain II.C was expanded to cover AI legislation passed besides the EU AI Act, the Domain II description was expanded to say so, the term “system” was added where models and systems are described, and examples were added to some performance indicators. The IAPP reviews the Body of Knowledge every year, changes about 10% to 15% of the exam content in each annual update, and announces changes at least 90 days before they reach the exam. This course follows v2.1 and is checked against the next version when it is announced.

How long should I study?
The IAPP recommends planning for a minimum of 30 hours of study before the exam date, and says you may need more or fewer depending on your background and experience. It names the Body of Knowledge as the main guide to what the exam covers, since questions may come from any topic listed under each competency.
Source: IAPP AIGP Study Guide (effective February 2026), page 4; IAPP Certification FAQs
How do I keep the certification once I pass?
The AIGP term is two years, starting the day after you pass. To keep it you provide evidence of 20 continuing education credits that correspond to the Body of Knowledge and pay a certification maintenance fee for the term, or hold IAPP membership, which includes the fee. A certification is awarded only once membership or a prepurchased maintenance fee is in place.
Source: IAPP Store: AIGP Exam; IAPP Certification Candidate Handbook v5.3.2 (effective June 1, 2026), page 13
Is the exam offered in other languages?
The IAPP store offers the AIGP exam in English. The IAPP’s translated exams, in French, German, Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese, are other designations, and its candidate handbook is available only in English. QualExam’s AIGP lessons, questions and mock exam are in English.
Source: IAPP Store: AIGP Exam; IAPP Certification FAQs
Is the exam open book?
No. The handbook lists bringing outside study materials into the exam environment and accessing electronic devices during the exam among the actions it treats as cheating, and before each exam candidates sign a confidentiality agreement not to disclose or reproduce the questions.
Source: IAPP Certification Candidate Handbook v5.3.2 (effective June 1, 2026), pages 16 and 19
What does QualExam offer for the AIGP, and what doesn’t it?
Lessons mapped to the Body of Knowledge’s 13 competencies, practice questions in the exam’s formats, including 3-of-5 multi-select questions, flashcards, and a timed mock exam that runs in two halves with the break between them. Every question here is original; none is AIGP exam content, which the IAPP keeps confidential. QualExam is an independent study resource, not an IAPP official training partner, and the IAPP says that exam preparation materials from anyone other than the IAPP and its official training partners are not endorsed by the IAPP.
