AIGP free resources: what costs nothing

The IAPP's four free documents and three sample questions, the free texts of the laws and frameworks the exam tests, and what a free account opens here.

More of the AIGP can be studied for nothing than the price list suggests. The IAPP gives away the four documents that define the exam, including the only questions it publishes in its own words, and the laws and frameworks the exam tests are public texts: the EU AI Act, the GDPR, NIST's AI Risk Management Framework and the OECD's Recommendation cost nothing to read. What is not free is the exam itself, the IAPP's practice exam, its training and its textbook, and the IAPP says plainly that none of the paid ones is required. This guide lists what is free, from the IAPP's own pages and the documents themselves, what the searches for a free AIGP practice exam, free training or a free PDF actually return, and what a free account opens here.

The short answer

  • Four free resources from the IAPP: the Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint, the study guide, the Certification Candidate Handbook, and the "Key terms for AI governance" page. The FAQs say "Start with these free resources" and "No one paid resource is required to pass the exam".
  • Three free questions: the study guide's example questions, two single-answer and one multi-select, with answers. They are the only IAPP questions you will see before the exam.
  • The texts the exam tests are free: the EU AI Act as amended in 2026, the Commission's guidelines, the GDPR, the Product Liability Directive, the NIST AI RMF and its Playbook, and the OECD Recommendation.
  • Nothing from the IAPP's training or practice exam is free: the practice exam is US$50 or US$60 and the online training US$995 or US$1,195, and free versions of either found elsewhere are not the IAPP's.
  • Here, the first competency is free in full with a free account: five lessons, 100 questions and 118 flashcards, plus the diagnostic and a study plan.

What does the IAPP give away?

The AIGP exam information page has a section headed "Prepare for the exam with these free resources", and it lists the AIGP Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint, in the edition for anyone "testing on or after 2 February 2026", and the Certification Candidate Handbook, each marked free. The same page's banner reads "Ready to Get Certified? Free Study Guide Download Now." The certification page's "Exam prep tools" section repeats the Body of Knowledge and adds the study guide: "Prepare with this downloadable guide that covers the exam format and offers sample questions." The certification FAQs, under how to prepare, give the fuller list, with a sentence on each.

The Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint. Nine pages, version 2.1, effective February 2, 2026, approved September 9, 2025. The FAQs: it "serves as the main guide as to what topics will be covered on the exam. The exam is created based on this exact document, so nothing will appear on the test that isn't on the body of knowledge." The blueprint is in the same document: "The exam blueprint helps you understand the format of the exam. It explains how the exam will be broken into sections as well as the minimum and maximum number of questions on each topic that you may see on the exam." Four domains, 13 competencies, 58 performance indicators, and the range of scored questions each competency carries. The AIGP Body of Knowledge v2.1, explained walks through it.

The study guide. Nine pages, free, with the exam's format, the IAPP's four preparation steps and its 30-hour recommendation, an outline of the Body of Knowledge, three example questions with their answers, and the certification's general rules. The certification index describes what a study guide is for: "Become familiar with topics on the exam, exam format and proven tips for success." AIGP study guide and books: free and official goes through it page by page.

The Certification Candidate Handbook. Twenty pages of rules. The FAQs' first instruction is "Read the certification candidate handbook. This handbook is available only in English." It holds the scoring, the two halves, the retake rules, the integrity policy and the confidentiality agreement, and the certification page says "We strongly encourage all potential test takers to read our certification candidate handbook before testing for details on our testing policies and procedures."

Key terms for AI governance. A web page, with a PDF version on the IAPP's site: "For AI governance terms, review our resource Key Terms for AI Governance." The web page holds 99 terms, and the page says it "was originally published in October 2023 and has been updated several times since to reflect the developing state of the art for AI governance." The Body of Knowledge's first indicator is to "Know the generally accepted definitions and types of AI", and this is the IAPP's own list of definitions. AIGP key terms: the glossary and flashcards sorts them by domain.

Then the FAQs draw the line between free and paid: "No one paid resource is required to pass the exam, nor do any serve as a catch-all study guide to passing the exam. The paid study materials we offer should serve as tools to help you learn the information in the free resources."

Are there free AIGP exam questions?

From the IAPP, three. The study guide's page 6 prints "Example questions" under the exam format: two single-answer questions, one on when an AI system is explainable and one on the purpose of an AI impact assessment, and one multi-select under the label "MULTI-SELECT: Please select 3 of the 5 options below. No partial credit will be given." The answers are on page 8. AIGP exam questions: what they look like describes them without reprinting them.

The IAPP's 100-question practice exam is not free: 50.00 USD for members and 60.00 USD for non-members on the store, a PDF with "Correct answers with explanations provided for each question." Everything that a search for free AIGP exam questions, a free practice exam or a free question bank returns is written by someone other than the IAPP. Some of it is honest practice written to the Body of Knowledge, and the handbook sets the limit for all of it, this site included: materials "produced or distributed by any enterprise or individual other than the IAPP and its official training partners (OTPs) are not endorsed by the IAPP, and we cannot guarantee that these materials adequately prepare candidates for certification."

Some of it claims to be the exam, and the handbook addresses that too: "any website, enterprise or individual claiming to have live IAPP exam content have obtained or reproduced them without permission. Candidates who knowingly access this illegally-obtained exam content through exam 'dump sites' or by other means are in violation of the pre-exam non-disclosure agreements and could face disciplinary action from the IAPP." The sanctions run from "Invalidation of exam results" to "Revocation of existing certifications". A free question that claims to be a real one is the one kind of free resource that can cost you the certification.

Is there free AIGP training?

Not from the IAPP. Its AIGP online training is 995.00 USD for members and 1195.00 USD for non-members, "seven interactive training modules" carrying 13.0 CPEs, and the exam information page's advice is to "Sign up for IAPP training right away and when it is time, register to take your exam." But the FAQs are careful about what training is: "Training is one step you can take to learn material covered on the exams (especially because training and exams are based on the same topic outline – what we call a Body of Knowledge), but please be aware that courses are not purely test prep, nor does taking training guarantee you'll pass your exam." Training is step two of the study guide's four, and the handbook's rule on preparation materials applies to it: "Certification exams are not a reflection of the candidate's ability to recall by memory the preparation materials."

Free AIGP training found elsewhere is a course by somebody other than the IAPP or its official training partners, under the handbook's non-endorsement sentence above. That does not make it useless; it makes it unendorsed, and its value depends on whether it teaches the Body of Knowledge's indicators from the documents they rest on. AIGP training: official, partner and self-study compares the options.

The free texts the exam is written about

The Body of Knowledge does not test the IAPP's documents; it tests the law and the frameworks, and those are published free by the bodies that wrote them. Domain II's competencies are to "Understand how existing data privacy laws apply to AI", "Understand how other types of existing laws apply to AI", "Understand the main elements of AI-specific laws" and "Understand the main industry standards and tools that apply to AI", and its indicators name the texts: "an understanding of the major elements of current AI laws (e.g., the EU AI Act, the South Korean AI Basic Law, federal and state AI laws that apply to private sector organizations)"; "Understand the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) principles, framework, policies and recommended practices for trustworthy AI. Understand the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and Playbook (e.g., core functions, categories and subcategories)."

These are the texts we pinned, with the pages of each edition:

A few notes on using them:

  • Read the AI Act in its consolidated text, not the 2024 Official Journal version. The Act was amended by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 in July 2026, after the Body of Knowledge in force was approved in September 2025, and the consolidated text of July 27, 2026 carries the changes. The EU AI Act as the AIGP tests it says what moved.
  • NIST publishes the AI RMF free: its second page reads "This publication is available free of charge from: https://doi.org/10.6028/NIST.AI.100-1". The Framework "is intended to be voluntary, rights-preserving, non-sector-specific, and use-case agnostic", and the Playbook the Body of Knowledge names is described in it as "An online companion resource to the AI RMF" that "is voluntary and organizations can utilize the suggestions according to their needs and interests." The NIST AI RMF as the AIGP tests it covers the core.
  • The OECD Recommendation is 12 pages. It "contains five high-level values-based principles and five recommendations for national policies and international co-operation", and it defines the terms the other documents borrow, "AI system", "AI system lifecycle" and "AI actors" among them. The OECD AI Principles as the AIGP tests it reads it clause by clause.
  • The ISO standards are the exception. The Body of Knowledge asks you to "Understand the core ISO AI standards (i.e., 22989, 42001 and 42005)", and ISO publishes its standards for purchase rather than as free texts. The exam tests what each standard is for, which the free documents above and any good course describe.

Reading the texts is free; reading them with the Body of Knowledge open beside them, indicator by indicator, is the study. Each of our lessons is written to the Body of Knowledge's indicators, so a lesson and the text it teaches can be read side by side.

Free AIGP study guide PDF, free book PDF: what you find

The IAPP's free PDFs are three: the Body of Knowledge, the study guide and the handbook. There is no free PDF of the IAPP's textbook, "AI Governance: From Strategy to Execution", which is sold at US$65 or US$75 digital and US$85 or US$95 print, or of its practice exam. A page offering either as a free download is offering a copy the IAPP did not provide, and a page offering the exam's questions is offering what the handbook calls dump-site content. The free study guides that other publishers write to the Body of Knowledge are a different matter, honest or not according to whether they show their sources.

What a free account opens here

Our course is not the IAPP's, and the handbook's non-endorsement sentence applies to it as to every third party. What it offers is teaching written to the 58 performance indicators from the documents above, with practice in the exam's format. A free account opens the first competency, AI and the need for governance, in full: five lessons, 100 questions and 118 flashcards, read in the app with your progress kept, plus the diagnostic and your study plan. Nothing is printed on the public pages; How practice works here describes the bank and the mock, which draws 100 questions at the blueprint's weights in two halves.

The free competency is the first of 13, and the Body of Knowledge's foundations: what AI is, its types, its risks and harms, why it needs governance, and the principles of responsible AI. It is enough to judge whether the course teaches the way you learn before you pay for the rest.

A free study plan, in the IAPP's order

The study guide's four steps work with nothing bought but the exam:

  1. Read the Body of Knowledge as a checklist of 58 indicators, and the handbook once for the rules.
  2. Learn each indicator from its source: the AI Act's consolidated text for Domain II.C, the GDPR for II.A, the NIST AI RMF and the OECD Recommendation for II.D, the Key Terms page for the definitions in I.A.
  3. Practice in the exam's shape, with the study guide's three questions for the IAPP's wording and whatever honest practice you choose for volume.
  4. Buy and schedule the exam when the indicators are covered, and plan the two halves: The AIGP exam: format, multi-select and the 300 explains the sitting.

How to study for the AIGP: a 30-hour plan weights the 30 hours by the blueprint's ranges, and What the AIGP exam costs in 2026 sets out what the paid options add if you want them.
