AIGP training: official, partner and self-study

The IAPP's AIGP training in four formats, what its online course includes and costs, how it relates to the exam, and official against unofficial trainers.

AIGP training comes in three kinds, and the IAPP's documents say what each is: the IAPP's own course, in four formats, which it calls "the principal training for AIGP certification"; courses from its Official Training Partners, which are the only others it endorses; and everything else, including the free and the cheap, which the handbook says it cannot vouch for and the training page warns about. None of the three is required to take the exam. This guide sets out what the IAPP's training contains and costs, how the IAPP itself describes the relationship between its training and its exam, how to tell an official trainer from an unofficial one, and what self-study looks like for the candidate who chooses it.

The short answer

  • The IAPP's AIGP training is sold online at US$995 for members and US$1,195 for non-members, as "seven interactive training modules" equivalent to "a 13-hour live training", and also as live online, in-person and group classes.
  • Training is not the exam's key. The FAQs: "courses are not purely test prep, nor does taking training guarantee you'll pass your exam." The handbook: training materials "are not one-to-one guides of exam content."
  • Training is not required. The FAQs: "No one paid resource is required to pass the exam". The study guide lists training as step two of four, after the Body of Knowledge.
  • Only Official Training Partners are endorsed. The training page: "Beware of unofficial trainers", who "often guarantee customers will pass IAPP certification exams."
  • Self-study is the IAPP's own first step, from the free Body of Knowledge, and a course written to it is a third way between the IAPP's price and nothing.

What is the IAPP's AIGP training?

The IAPP's training page opens with the claim and the content: "As the principal training for AIGP certification, AIGP training teaches how to develop, integrate and deploy trustworthy artificial intelligence systems in line with emerging laws and policies." It says who it is for: "Any professionals tasked with developing AI governance and risk management in their operations, and anyone pursuing IAPP Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional certification."

The curriculum on the page is grouped under six headings, each with a few lines of content: foundations of artificial intelligence ("Core concepts of AI and machine learning", "Different types of AI models and systems", "The AI development life cycle"); AI impacts and responsible principles; AI governance and risk management; laws and standards related to AI ("Global AI-specific regulation", "Existing laws that apply to AI", "GDPR intersections", "IP legislation and AI", "Liability reform"); governing AI development; and governing AI deployment. Set beside the Body of Knowledge's four domains, the headings track them: the first two are Domain I, the fourth is Domain II, the last two are Domains III and IV. The page itself says the course "provides an overview of AI technology, survey of current law, and strategies for risk management, among many other relevant topics."

Four formats are offered. Online: "Learn at your own pace with training modules that present content from highly experienced instructors through video, audio, text and interactive quizzes." Live online: "Train from any location through a virtual classroom on your computer and experience the same real-time exchange of ideas of a physical environment." In-person: "Experience traditional, in-person learning sessions led by an industry thought leader, and network with industry peers." Group: "Address your organization's digital responsibility needs with IAPP group training, delivered on-site and at your convenience."

The store page for the online format is the most specific. It is "Accessible online through your MyIAPP portal, seven interactive training modules developed in collaboration with highly experienced subject matter experts. The online course delivers the equivalent of a 13-hour live training. Time spent in the eLearning environment may vary among learners. You can start, stop and re-watch modules whenever it is convenient for you." Its five outcomes: "Understand the technological foundations of artificial intelligence and the AI development lifecycle. Evaluate AI's effects on people and apply appropriate principles. Know how current and emerging laws apply to AI systems. Implement responsible AI governance and risk management. Contemplate ongoing issues and concerns." What comes with it: "A printable certificate of attendance, available after you complete the training." It carries 13.0 CPEs, and the CPE policy's activity list credits an IAPP online training course at 13 CPEs, self-submitted; for someone who already holds a CIPP or CIPM, the AIGP training is a term's worth of continuing education on its own, before the AIGP exam is even taken.

How does the training relate to the exam?

The IAPP is unusually direct about this, because it has to be. The FAQs: "Training is one step you can take to learn material covered on the exams (especially because training and exams are based on the same topic outline – what we call a Body of Knowledge), but please be aware that courses are not purely test prep, nor does taking training guarantee you'll pass your exam." The reason given is structural: "To maintain accreditation, ISO requires a separation between the IAPP's certification and training departments. This means that while our training developers and instructors know which topics will be covered on an exam, they cannot see the tests or answer questions about whether a specific item will be on a given exam."

The handbook says the same from the exam's side. Separate boards build the two: "As these separate but equally qualified boards and teams develop the training and the exam, the content will reflect the same overarching topics on the body of knowledge. IAPP training materials are tools to help candidates build their understanding of the topics on the body of knowledge but are not one-to-one guides of exam content." And on what the exam measures: "Certification exams are not a reflection of the candidate's ability to recall by memory the preparation materials. Preparation materials can be useful tools for building a working understanding of the topics on a body of knowledge." The certification index compresses it to three sentences: "IAPP certifications are standalone credentials. Official training courses help you study for exams. However, exam questions do not correspond directly to training materials."

So the official training is a course on the Body of Knowledge taught by people who have not seen the exam. That is a fair description of any honest course, this site's included, and the practical consequence is the same for all of them: the Body of Knowledge, not the course, is the thing to check your coverage against. The AIGP Body of Knowledge v2.1, explained is the checklist.

Is AIGP training required?

No. The study guide's four steps put it second: "1. Review the body of knowledge", "2. Get certification training", "3. Take the AIGP practice exam", "4. Purchase and schedule your exam", and step two is described as an offer, not a condition: "The IAPP offers in-person, live online and self-paced online certification prep classes to help you prepare for your exams." The FAQs close the question: "No one paid resource is required to pass the exam, nor do any serve as a catch-all study guide to passing the exam. The paid study materials we offer should serve as tools to help you learn the information in the free resources." The exam information page is keener, "Sign up for IAPP training right away and when it is time, register to take your exam", but it is the same offer.

The study guide's advice on choosing is the sensible one: "Deciding how you will prepare for your exams is a personal choice that should include an assessment of your professional background, scope of knowledge and your preferred method of learning." A lawyer who has read the AI Act and the NIST framework in the original may need a structured review and practice, not 13 hours of lectures; a product manager new to the law may want the lectures.

Official training partners and unofficial trainers

Searches for AIGP training return courses sold on learning marketplaces, by local training companies in many countries, and by individuals. The IAPP's position on them is in two documents.

The handbook's rule: "Any exam preparation materials produced or distributed by any enterprise or individual other than the IAPP and its official training partners (OTPs) are not endorsed by the IAPP, and we cannot guarantee that these materials adequately prepare candidates for certification." The training page's warning: "Beware of unofficial trainers: Unofficial trainers often guarantee customers will pass IAPP certification exams. They may also claim to be authorized by the IAPP, and/or use the IAPP's logo and seal. To see if a trainer is authorized, view our list of global IAPP Official Training Partners."

Three checks follow from that. A trainer who claims IAPP authorization should be on the IAPP's published list of Official Training Partners; the claim alone is not evidence. A guarantee of passing is the mark the IAPP itself associates with unofficial trainers, and since the IAPP says its own training does not guarantee a pass, no one else's can. And a course that offers the exam's own questions is offering what the handbook calls dump-site content, which can cost you the certification; AIGP practice exam: the IAPP's, and a mock sets out that rule.

None of this makes an unofficial course bad. It makes it unendorsed, which is the status of every course outside the IAPP and its partners, including ours. The question to ask of any of them is whether it teaches the Body of Knowledge's 58 performance indicators from the documents they rest on.

How much does AIGP training cost?

The online course is US$995 for members and US$1,195 for non-members on the store. The live online, in-person and group formats are sold through the IAPP's training schedule and its partners, and the training page we pinned gives no price for them. With the exam at US$649 or US$799 and the practice exam at US$50 or US$60, the IAPP's full path of exam, practice exam and online training comes to US$1,989 for a member and US$2,054 for a non-member, before membership itself. What the AIGP exam costs in 2026 has the arithmetic, including when the US$295 membership pays for itself.

Free AIGP training does not exist from the IAPP; what is free is the Body of Knowledge, the study guide, the handbook and the Key Terms page, which AIGP free resources: what costs nothing lists.

Self-study, and a course between the two

The IAPP's own first step is self-study: read the Body of Knowledge, which "can help you further target your primary study needs and determine which areas merit additional focus in your preparation." Its recommendation of "a minimum of 30 hours of study time in advance of your exam date" is a planning figure, with the caveat that "you might need more or fewer hours depending on your personal choices and professional experience." How to study for the AIGP: a 30-hour plan weights those hours by the blueprint's ranges, and the texts the exam tests, the EU AI Act, the GDPR, the NIST AI RMF and the OECD Recommendation, are free to read.

Our course is the structured version of that self-study: 57 lessons written to the 58 performance indicators, 1,364 practice questions in the exam's format including the 3-of-5 multi-select, flashcards, and a mock drawn at the blueprint's weights in two halves. It is not IAPP training and is not endorsed by the IAPP, and it does not guarantee a pass; it teaches the Body of Knowledge from its sources and keeps your progress by indicator. The first competency, AI and the need for governance, is free in full with a free account: five lessons, 100 questions and 118 flashcards. The AIGP course and what it costs is on the pricing page.
